What do YOU like to see in fantasy books?
Written by admin on March 22, 2009 – 4:28 am -Hey guys,
I'm currently working on a fantasy project, and although I've got the essentials down, I thought that I'd ask the general [online] public what they like most in fantasy books. There is no wrong answer, so please just answer with what you think makes a great fantasy book. Don't be afraid to give a long answer. Thanks!
its good when the evil is actually evil. not just "wants to take over the world" but you actually hate the villain and they are genuinely scary when you read about them – that always makes for a good story.
Its also more interesting when the story sort of explores the Fantasy world, like in harry potter how you learn more and more about it and get sucked into it.
There should be a little bit of a love story (not massive like twilight if you want boys to read it) but a little bit of lovey dovey tension between some characters.
the book would also be more popular if, as well as magical problems, the characters faced some that are relative to the real world, but with a twist. If you make it so that no one can relate to any of the characters, readers wont be as enticed as they could be.
i think its also awesome when the fantasy action involved is a twist on myths and legends, like how the mermaids in peter pan (the real-life movie) and in harry potter were bad when the whole world sees them as good and mythical. twists on stories people know is really interesting to read.
good luck!

An AMV I did to Enya’s Book of Days. I think it’s a really pretty song, and FFX is really cool, and they went together well. I like how this one turned out. Enjoy!

Any good scifi or fantasy books with a main character thats around 19?
Written by admin on March 21, 2009 – 3:53 am -I’m looking for a book that relates to me the most. I’m just becoming a full fledged adult (recently moved out of my parents house) and am attending college… Doesn’t have to be a close match, but I wanted to read a fantasy/scifi book about someone in a similar situation.
You could always read Harry Potter. At the beginning of the series, Harry is only about 12 or 13 but by around the 4th book he is around 14. It isn’t until the last book that he is around that age.
Even though I can’t recommend you an actual book, there are a few graphic novels (comics) I can recommend you. You have probably heard of manga (Japanese graphic novels) somewhere along the line since they are so popular. There are two mangas that I can recommend you that just about perfectly fit your description.
The first one is Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. It is about a high school student (About 18 years of age) by the name of Light Yagami. He is the top of his class and he has great prospects. One day while he is looking out the window of his classroom he spots a notebook lying on the ground. He picks it up and sees that it is entitled Death Note. There are instructions on the back. It says that whosever name is written in the book will die and you can also give cause of death and other details. Light thinks the book is some sort of prank at first but then he tries it out and discovers that it works. He then decides to use the book to kill criminals and rid the world evil. But even though he is killing people that the world is better off without, he is still considered a murderer. So the authorities send their top detective, L, to track down the mysterious criminal killer. With the detectives hot on his heels, he must constantly find ways to stay one step ahead of them and it soon becomes a huge battle of wits. The series is 12 books long so it should last you a good amount of time depending on how fast you read and how often you buy the books.
The second is Bleach by Tite Kubo. It is about Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who is able to see ghosts. He soon meets Rukia Kuchiki, who is a Soul Reaper. These are people that kill hollows (ghosts of people that have been killed that still roam the earth) and send them to the Soul Society (basically Heaven) Ichigo sees Rukia but he is not supposed to be able to. When a hollow begins to terrorize the town, Rukia temporarily lends Ichigo some of her Soul Reaper powers. Soon after a chain events leads Ichigo into becoming a permanent Soul Reaper. It may sound kind of weird with me explaining it to you, but when you read it, it is really good. The series has 24 books out now and is still running so it will definetely last you.
Oh, and by the way, I forgot to tell you where you can buy manga. Just go to your local bookstore (Barnes and Noble or Books a Million) and go to the graphic novel section. Then there is a shelf with a sign that says manga. They are usually in alphabetical order, so pick up whichever one of my two recommendations you think is most interesting or maybe another one you think you would like. Some other good mangas include…….
Hellsing
Naruto
One Piece
Rurouni Kenshin
Among others.
