Well, I personally like Stephen King, Dean Koontz, & H.P. Lovecraft. I recommend the Stand, Watchers, & any of Lovecraft’s stories.
Be careful of the “not really horror” books out there. There’s a lot that are technically considered horror b/c they talk about vampires, witches, ect, but they’re far from being real horror.
Just try picking up random books in your bookstore or library that deal with horror. Sometimes the best finds are the ones you find yourself. References :
Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. It’s horror, but not like nightmares kind of horror. It’s thought provoking. It’s about an aging rock star that is being chased across America by a ghost. The story and characters are so real, they stay with you a long time. His descriptions and pacing are spot-on, and the whole book kind of has a wonderful heart–almost a spirit–I tend to think of my favorite books as friends, and this is definitely one of my good friends.
